This really doesn't have much to do with Christianity since the New Testament doesn't advocate violence. These two idiots did this all on their own.
It has as much to do with Christianity as Islamic terrorists have to do with Islam. Regardless of what the book says, they did it in the name of the religion, and without the religion it would likely never have happened.

Its not really made clear, but I doubt its because the class was cancelled. The implication is that he was attacked either because of his beliefs, or his criticism of what he calls "fundies".
