I think it is real and not a hoax.

I disagree when they say that CD's are impervious - they get scratched up - anybody have kids?

They are also susceptible to the elements, dust, dirt, heat and UV and people stepping on them. They are a tougher than albums due to the nature of them being made out of metal and read by a very weak laser instead of by a mechanical needle ... but hands still handle both media and can drop and scratch.
