Nuclear power got shut down by accountants, not enviros. Nuclear plants don't make money.

that don't make much sense, since they create a lot of power using the heat of nuclear reaction transferred through pressurized water to a heat exchanger that causes another water system to steam which spins a turbine. Fairly cheap to maintain.

Their per kilowatt cost is MUCH higher than gas or coal, and thats before adding waste disposal.

The reason for that is regulations. Building a reactor isn't that expensive until you start including the premium dude to scarcity of parts and fuel created by regulation.

We are at the point where even with the increased costs, energy costs make nuclear competitive.

The problem is that much like wind, we don't make most of the expensive bits anymore, and it's cheaper to wait in line and send jobs overseas than to create new industry here and start realizing the savings/benefits earlier.

In the case of nuclear, this is mostly due to so much regulation, we essentially dissolved significant capital investment we can't really afford to make again. Heck, even if we had on site fuel reprocessing, I don't know if that would make it enough cheaper that getting on line for key parts form china or France not the most cost effective approach.

I'm not saying all regulations are bad, but there are onerous regulations that increase costs.

Chernobyl was a shitty reactor design. Mandating good design isn't where the regulations really cause issues.

Obama is a hypocrite! First he closed Yucca Mountain, where we are supposed to put radioactive waste, and now he wants to open new plants?????

He will choke on the hypocrisy.

Maybe he wasn't back then, but has been convinced that it is a necessary part of our energy mix. It is something called changing your position based on new information. It is also called learning. You should look into it.
