Maybe "lesser light" means a reflection! They should have had a healthy debate instead of storming off.
I was watching a program on The Vatican yesterday on The History Channel and in one segment they interviewed a guy who is an American priest who works in the Vatican as a scientist. It sounds weird, but this guy is legitimately both a priest and a scientist.
The guy made a tremendous amount of sense to me. Among other gems, he said;
"One thing you can guarantee about a science book is that in ten years it will be out of date. The Bible never goes out of date. You aren't doing the Scriptures any favor by making them into a science book. The Bible isn't a science book."
Besides, what kind of Holy Book would have broken down the physics of thermonuclear conversion of matter into energy for one light in the sky and a highly reflective surface for the other? Who would take such a chapter and verse seriously?
People can be so stupid sometimes.
Duh, everyone knows that cheese (which the moon is made out of) emits it's own glorious illumination!

Maybe "lesser light" means a reflection! They should have had a healthy debate instead of storming off.
Sure, but some people are not hip on being challenged, and to add to that, Bill Nye can come of as a pretty sizable asshole when it comes to anything political and/or religious when he doesn't have a script and an editor.
Oh yeah, he should watch it with controversial comments like the one about the moon not generating its own light.
I didn't say it was a controversial statement. But there is a big difference between showing up to someplace where you are supposed to talk about the solar system with kids, and decide to add in challenges to the existence of god because you think religious people are fools.
From the article, I sure didn't get that Bill Nye thinks religious people are fools.
Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College's Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave two lectures on such unfunny and adult topics as global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption.
But nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars."
The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector."
Now, nothing I'm seeing in the article smacks as good solid reporting, so I'm taking the quote for what it is worth.
However, that's basically showing up, saying hey. Since I was talking about entertaining science, how about while visiting the bible belt, I bring up your creation myth and then explain how it's scientifically invalid and thus stupid.
Even religious folks can tell when you are politely insulting them.
At a community college (not a religious gathering), he stated a scientific fact/observation and people got pissed and walked out because he was attacking their belief system, faith, what-have-you. Still, that's hardly an excuse for kidnapping.
One person saying something about the book your belief system is based on should not cause you to be so offended, though. Bill may have not shown much tact, but his one comment shouldn't shake them up so much. That's life, we aren't always going to agree on everything, get over it.
Check you out - being all reasonable and stuff.
