What he SAYS regarding the problems and what needs fixing is pretty cogent stuff. How he plans to achieve it is mostly pretty stupid.

I'm sorry, but free trade agreements with nations with horrific wages and environmental laws pretty much guarantee that you are in a race to the bottom for both wages and environmental laws. You just removed a barrier to choosing that path.

Basically he plans to bail out the various teachers unions in trade for votes. He plans on heaping pork onto various states to buy votes. He plans to extend payroll tax breaks, and extend unemployment benefits so that he can try to hold the line on the economy and it doesn't look like he is making it worse. The only long term promise is to pull the handle and flush a buttload of jobs down the toilet and float them over to the pacific rim.

Sooooo.... not really a good plan.

No, it's a classic example of not looking past the next election.

By dumping aid on state governments, he shores up house and senate races for the Ds. The free trade thing placates big business donors, but will likely have no demonstrable effects until after all is said and done. Dragging out unemployment benefits keeps the disgruntled unemployed at bay. Prolonging the payroll tax break keeps backlash from that ending at bay. Both of which expire just after the election so that he can try to play on fears anything but Obama in office will see them cut.

About the only thing not in the self serving pandering for votes category was the threat to reduce corporate subsidies and to pay contractors faster.

He has to deal with this every day, you really think he is not looking past the next election?

Looks like he has gone a bit grey over the last several years of it.

It could also be said that the right so desperate to NOT let anything happen, and to NOT progress before elections that they will do and say anything to stop it.. And from the "Party of No!" Thats not a big leap in thought. We have already had to pay for it this long, we already have been through the credit downgrade over it.

If the economy recovers before next year's election, Obama will be reelected. The GOP has said plainly enough that defeating Obama is their highest priority, presumably higher than getting the economy going again.

I say if that matches your own priority, you would rather have a new president than a job, they go ahead and vote GOP.
