My best friend died from, and I am a survivor of, cervical cancer. We were both born too early for the vaccine. Parents who want to protect their daughters against HPV will make sure they are vaccinated. Those that think the vaccine is dangerous or not needed because their children will not have sex are fucking delusional.

While I feel her comment was poorly crafted, the truth is that vaccines are not completely benign. Vaccine reactions are incredably rare and do not justify not getting the protection they offer. However, anaphlactic reactions have occured and a vaccine adverse reaction fund was set up by the US gov many years ago pays out when a vaccine reaction occurs. This is in general with all vaccines. The only way I would see this happening with Gardasil would be a patient who was extremely allergic to the ingredents (yeast in this case) and that has a reaction followed by a severe hypoxic event. The brain injury could then be called a retardation. I have never heard of this happening. Also understand that autism and retardation (I dont like that word to describe a medical issue) are not the same or related.

India Suspends Gardasil!
Unlike in the United States, The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has told two Indian states, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, to halt its Gardasil vaccine study, which was slated to test the vaccine in about 32,000 girls between the ages of 10 and 14.

Big T is against Gardasil, got it. Was just trying to answer Gramps' question on how a vaccine can make some one "retarded". Answer is theorertical, but possible. I will add that value in vaccines is not only in lives saved but also cost saved. This may not be the most leathal cancer but treating it does cost significant money. On the other hand, it is a newer vaccine and there are risks to balance the need. I offer it, but I let the parents know about the risks and many do turn it down.

The state of California has just passed bill AB499, which will permit minor children as young as 12 years old to be vaccinated with sexually transmitted disease vaccines like Gardasil without parental knowledge or parental consent.
