Rods are Art Bell territory. He got heavily into them back in the 1990's I think.

Hmm, why does the rod sound like a spring loaded mechanism? Perhaps because it is just something launching a small object close to the objective lens. And all the zooming in the world won't tell you anything other than the fact that compressed video doesn't zoom in to pixel sized objects well.
